Hi everyone!
This is my very 1st post on our new YBL message board. My hope in starting this is that we can all start interacting with each other. I have met so many interesting people here at the center over the past 3 months with so many different kinds of expertise that I thought it would be great to stay connected with everyone and share all of these interesting people and dialogs with you.
I just finished working with a coaching client who is working on becoming a better leader in her professional life. After she left I started thinking about the qualities of a great leader? So these are my thoughts/opinions:
1.They have an insatiable appetite for learning and personal development. 2.They lead by example: To have the courage to do the right thing not always the most popular. 3.They value diversity and different perspectives. 4.They are not only open to change, they embrace it. (They are change agents) 5.They really care about people as well as getting results. Integrity
Please share with us your thoughts with us on leadership qualities important to you.

Hi Steve In addition to the important characteristics of a good leader, I would add:
They have the ability to empathize and understand others' points of view (this may be what you meant by your #3) They have a sense of humor They can think creatively and come up with what might be needed as circumstances change They are able to inspire people to dedicate themselves to the job at hand.

I'll add some of my favorites to the list:
• Authenticity. Keep it real. Really real. Cranked up to "eleven" real. (It's a Spinal Tap reference in case you don't get it.) Even is it's...
• Messy. Leadership isn't always buttoned-up neat and tidy. Real wins over pretty. Real is really reassuring.
• Elephant hunter. A great leader is willing to say "Hey, looky there. What's that?!" when there's a big fat elephant in the room. This often requires...
• Courage. Being a leader requires a goodly quantity. Gulp.
• Oops. Great leaders fall down. Because they're forging new territory. The key is to get over the "oops" and recover gracefully. (Laughter helps.)
• Willingness. For whatever is required. All of the above and whatever else is necessary. Even when it means that you can't do it all yourself. Which leads to...
• Asking for help. Which cohabitates with...
• Receiving help. Good leaders know that they are not good at everything. And they do...
• Know what they do well. And trust themselves.
